History Marbella

Until 1946 Marbella was an unknown fishing village with barely 1000 inhabitants.

However, this quickly changed when the German prince Maximilian de Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his son Alfonso made an unplanned stop in Marbella, due to a breakdown with their Rolls-Royce. Alfonso
fell in love with the city and bought a ruined finca there. Finca Santa Margarita became so popular with visitors that he expanded it and in 1954 transformed it from his own home into the exclusive Marbella Club hotel.

The Marbella Club initially owes its immense success to one telephone line. The hotel had the only telephone in Marbella (there were only two telephone lines in Andalusia), so passers-by often stopped to make important calls. However, a connection could sometimes take a whole day. While waiting, the guests had a drink, ate something, played a game of tennis or relaxed for a while.

Together with his cousin, the charming Count Rudolf Graf von Schönburg - known in Marbella as Count Rudi - he continued to build the reputation of the Marbella Club, making it a luxury haven for actors, celebrities, industrialists, politicians, the European jet set and royalty.

The Fürstenbergs and the Bismarcks, the Rothschilds and Oppenheims, industrialists such as Henry Ford , Edward Kennedy, the Krupps , the Agnellis , Onassis and Stavros Niarchos, Duke of Windsor. James Stewart. Brigitte Bardot. Ava Gardner . Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Jamie de Mora y Aragon , the brother of Queen Fabiola are just a few of the famous names who came to enjoy Marbella.

The story of Marbella and the story of Marbella Club is the same story. Prince Alfonso will go down in history as the father of modern Marbella.

In the 1990s Alfonso sold his shares in the hotel and moved to Ronda to end his life as a winemaker. Alfonso died in 2003.
